burning pasture for parasite control

I just got this "brilliant" idea today -- if I burn the pastures, that should kill the worms, right? I googled it and found this article, which said it can help:
http://www.sheep101.info/201/parasite.html
This is also just a good general-info article on parasite control in small ruminants. Although it says "sheep" in the web address, they do mention goats.

Has anyone on here tried burning pasture to control parasites? I'm thinking we should wait a little longer until the worms have broken dormancy, so eggs that may have fallen into cracks in the soil have started to hatch and the larvae is on the grass. Any other thoughts?

Other articles I found said that it even eliminates coccidia and kills ticks on pasture! For ticks, you should do it in late spring. I know we start seeing ticks in May.

Thanks,
Deborah

  • There was only one problem with my brilliant idea. The grass has to be fairly tall to burn. We're not having much luck with this in most of the pastures, because the grass was eaten down too short.
