Arizona Newbie

Hi, I'm a new goat owner (wether and doe, Nigerians) in Arizona.  Immense fun seeing the neighbors reaction in our (sub)urban neighborhood!  Both are 2-3, need some work to be comfortable with me.  Any hints on training?

  • Welcome to the group! Training them usually works best in a small area -- like 10 X 15 or smaller -- with food. Goats can be bribed with food. Since they don't need grain at their age (assuming the doe is dry), you can just put a little in a feed pan and hold is, so that they don't get to eat it unless they come up to you. If they won't come that close, you can put it on the ground. On the other hand, if they do run up right away and start eating, you can pet them. Basically follow their lead. Back off if they seem scared. Gradually handle them more, and before you know it, they'll be your new friends.
