Are these tapeworms? (poop pic inside)

So, I just wormed my entire herd 2 weeks ago with Cydectin per the vets instructions. Everything was looking good till I noticed some of my youngins with these worms in their poo. Is this what tapeworms look like?

If these are tapeworms, does Cydectin treat them or just Safeguard/panacure?

If I use safeguard, do I use it 3 days in a row or is it once a week for 3 weeks?

I have the safeguard for goats. Do I use the dosage on the bottle or something different?

Thank you!

Kelly

  • I had never heard about not using it in kids, and I personally did use it in kids quite a bit. I quit using it about five years ago, because the barberpole on my farm became resistant to it, so I just checked the manufacturer's info on it:

It doesn't say anything about not using it in kids -- just the warning about pregnancy. It is interesting that it is now labeled for goats! I had not heard about that! Everyone I know used to always use it at twice the cattle dosage, but they have it labeled for the same dosage as cattle now. Anyway, I used to give it to kids at twice that dosage and had no problems.

  • Thank you for the info Deborah...I do have a whole bottle of Valbazen, but I was told by another ND breeder not to use it on kids younger than 6 months of age because it could cause some serious side affects. How true is this? TY again!

  • Yep, probably tapes. You need a white dewormer for that, so Safeguard is one, but most people say it needs to be used three days in a row for tapes. Valbazen can be given in a single dose, but it is not safe for pregnant animals. Praziquantel also kills tapes in a single dose, but it is an equine dewormer that is generally available as a combo with either moxidectin or ivermectin. Safeguard is the only one labeled for goats, and the dosage on the goat bottle is appropriate for them. The others are not labeled for goats, and people usually double the dosage.
