I have a friend that needs a home for her pet herd of Oberhaslis in Oregon. They are 10 years old, and she has 5 does and one whether. She doesn't want them to go to auction, and she wants to find a home for them that will be kind to them. They have never been bred, but she has spoken to her vet, and that vet has told her they can be bred. (I personally wouldn't breed them at this age, and never having been bred.) She also thinks that a couple of them with precocious udders could be milked without breeding. I have no experience with this, so I can't speak to that. She is a small business owner, and has recently taken her business on the road, which is why she needs to find a home for her herd. The herd is free to a good home.

  • Nope! Not a typo! I told her the same thing, but she has spoken to her vet, and her vet (mistakenly, IMO) has told her they would be fine. She has only ever had them as pets, and never used them for milk. The vet also told her they have genetics to be "maiden milkers" which should tell you how old the vet's information is... lol He/She also told her she could milk them and they would be good milkers without breeding. (shaking my head)

  • Was that a typo, or are her goats seriously 10 years old? If so, a home that will be kind to them will not breed them. I don't even breed some of my milkers when they're that old. I can't believe a vet said it would be okay to breed a doe that's never been bred and is that old. Some goats are not even fertile any longer at that age.
