Abnormally fast heart rate

I have two sets of triplets born two weeks ago. All have seemed very healthy until yesterday. One Doelling has a very rapid heart rate with very rapid breathing. She is up and moving about but not with as much energy as the others. Last night I checked your tip it was 101. She is nursing and nibbling and hay. She does not act like she is in pain. You can see her heart beating hard if you look at her across the room. she is urinating normally I have not seen a bowel movement. Any ideas?

  • Thanks for being such a responsible goat breeder and taking such good care of your little girl!

  • Rapid Heart rate Update--"Elsa" has continued to have a rapid heart rate usually 120 to 160 BPM and one time measured over 200BPM. She also has periods of irreg rhythem and a  very loud heart murmer. My Vet predicts that her heart will fail ---and is surprised that she is doing as well as she is.  At one month of age she was the same size as her siblings, now at 31/2 months she is is 17 lbs while siblings range from 23 to 28 lbs.   She plays and head butts like the others and has a great appetite. I have not found any advise other than to support her as any other healthy baby goat.  If anyone has any suggestion as to how to keep her healthy I am all ears!  I will keep her here, of course no tattoo or registration and will never breed her if she does survive.

  • Rapid Heart Rate--My doe with the rapid heart rate seems to be doing fine .  She is eating, pooping . growing and jumping about just like the other 5 who are near her age.  Heart is still throbbing faster and harder than any of the others.

  • Debra thanks for your reply. She has been pooping Normally for two weeks I just wanted to include that I had not observed the status of her poop sense I've noticed the increased heart rate.. Today her little heart is throbbing just as rapidly but she does not seem like she is in any distress. Her belly feels just like The bellies of the other five who have normal heart rates. Others have also told me that the vet will not be able to do anything about a heart abnormality.. I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and how it turned out.
  • You don't usually see bowel movements in very young kids, unless you are spending a lot of time with them. If she couldn't poop, she'd have died long ago. We've had people on here with kids that were born without a rectum, and they are very ill, very quickly. Heat would have been my first guess, but sometimes kids are born with a heart defect that does not become obvious immediately. You could take her to the vet if it continues, but I'm not sure if they could do much, especially if it is a defect. Keep us updated.

  • No, we have had no extreme heat. The dueling just started doing this yesterday and it was in the 70s out side. We are expecting temps in the 90s this weekend and I imagine he's going to be very hard on her.
  • Is the weather getting pretty hot where you live? I noticed my 3 week old buckling panting a bit today with the heat.

  • Meant to say I checked her temp and it was 101
